The Secret Life of Poems:
What exactly are poems? And what are they good for? In the 20th century the pre-eminent poetic mode was the lyric, and so poems, generally speaking, were short, explosive devices. Many famous longer poems were written then, too -- William Carlos Williams's Paterson and Ezra Pound's Cantos, for example. Yet neither of these was entirely successful because, in part, they seemed to be occupying some uneasy middle ground between a kind of writing that was embedded in myth, and something more akin to fiction.

Judging the Bridport Prize: Poetry Report by Don Paterson [UK]:
"I'm making my final cut in the bar of a very large boat, in the North Channel of the Irish Sea, in something the captain alleges is a 'light swell'. This thing seemed like the, uh, Titanic when we were in Belfast, but now feels like a rubber duck in a bathtub. The sea reduces everything to a cork, and there's a brutal democracy to all this that sits perfectly, I suppose, with the brutal anonymity of the Poetry Competition. Which is more than I can say for my breakfast."
